Novikov Gennadiy Olegovich appointed as head of Ukraine’s new gambling regulator, PlayCity
Ukraine has recently made a significant decision in appointing Novikov Gennadiy Olegovich as the head of the country’s new gambling regulator, PlayCity. This appointment comes at a crucial time for Ukraine’s gaming sector, following the closure of the previous regulator, KRAIL, amidst scandals and controversies.
Experience and Background of Novikov Gennadiy Olegovich
Prior to his role at PlayCity, Olegovich served as the head of the National Agency for the Prevention of Corruption, where he actively fought against fraud in Ukraine. He also played a key role in implementing sanctions against individuals with ties to Russia, following the invasion of Ukraine in 2020.
With a background in the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine and experience in the Sumy region’s prosecutor’s office, Olegovich brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his new position at PlayCity.
Replacing KRAIL Amid Scandals
KRAIL, the previous gambling authority in Ukraine, faced various scandals, including the involvement of its former head, Ivan Rudyi, in criminal activities. Rudyi was linked to a case involving cocaine possession and supporting a Russian-affiliated online casino.
Furthermore, KRAIL was criticized for its lack of action against gaming operator 1xBet, believed to have ties to Russia. In response to these issues, Ukraine decided to shut down KRAIL and establish PlayCity as the new regulatory body for the gaming sector.
PlayCity’s Role and Responsibilities
PlayCity will operate as a central executive body under the Ministry of Digital Transformation, with a team of 61 members overseeing the implementation of government gambling reforms. The regulator will be responsible for ensuring that all gaming operators comply with local rules and regulations.
Recently, Ukraine introduced new restrictions on gambling advertisements, prohibiting marketing materials targeting individuals under 21 and banning the use of military personnel in gambling ads. These measures aim to address the rising issue of gambling addiction among soldiers.
